layout
This layout concept is generally based on a Branch Line
within the Great Western Railway in South Western England.
The track is Micro-Trains Roadbed mounted on traditional
modular 2'x 4' construction. The name inspiration came from
a series of articles in a late 1980's "Your Model Railways"
entitled "The Haulty Papers". I thought Grinding Hault was
such a clever name for a terminus I had to borrow it.
Here is the start of the first module...Grinding Hault. The view shows the scenic
block formed by the hill side. The landscape mimics a rural Tetford with a few
small family plots and low trees. Base size is 2'x 4' and Pink Insulation Foam
forms the elevations. The foam was shaped using a metal rasp and course
sandpaper. This works down quickly.
Here is the foam covered with light weight Spackling paste. This stuff works
great when you rub it into the surface of the foam. Successive coats can be
smoothed down with a wet broad brush or small foam roller. I cut the access
road into the foam before covering...the small dot in the center of the frame is
an Z scale car.
Low angle shot of the yard area. In the photo is a Siphon pattern
waiting for some RTV, and a 3rd Class Coach kit bashed from a
Marklin German Passenger Car. More on these later.
